8'7" Hobie

Vintage Hobie Surfboards Dana Point, California longboard estimated to date to approximately 1963–1964.

I contacted Kris Carlow at Hobie Surf Shop and provided detailed photos of the board. Based on his experience with vintage Hobies, he estimated the board to be from approximately 1963 or 1964. Unfortunately, Hobie’s production records from the 1960s no longer exist, so the exact year, model, and shaper cannot be confirmed.

• Approximately 8’6.5” long x 21.5” wide x 2.5” thick

• Hobie Surfboards – Dana Point, Calif. diamond laminate

• Number 4607 marked on the stringer

• Wide wood center stringer

• Original-style glassed-on single fin

• Beautiful green/turquoise color with contrasting deck stripe

• Classic early-1960s shape and construction

The board was professionally restored by Joe Roper’s Surfboard Repair in San Diego and presents extremely well while retaining the character expected from a surfboard of this age. There are scratches, discoloration, and other signs of its history, which can be seen in the photos.

Kris at Hobie also noted that the unusually short 8’6.5” length for this period suggests it may originally have been made for a grom or female surfer.

A very cool piece of Southern California surfing history and an excellent board for a vintage surfboard collector, display, or someone looking for an early Hobie.
